Making motto candies since 1866
The first sayings came off a Boston press in 1866, and the heart shape followed in 1902. Today Spangler Candy keeps the line running in Bryan, Ohio.

Keeping them crisp
How the hearts stay good
Do
- Keep boxes sealed until the party morning. The carton is the freshness seal.
- Store the stash in a cool, dry cupboard. Pressed sugar keeps for months there.
- Pour bag hearts into a dry bowl right before guests land.
- Fold leftovers into cookie dough or press them onto frosted cupcakes.
Better not
- Leave the tray on a sunny windowsill. Heat softens the press.
- Park an open bag in the fridge. Damp air takes the snap out of a heart.
- Mix an opened bag back in with sealed stock.
- Expect a saying on every heart. A few come off the press blank, and kids trade for those.
